2+ Minute Race

This is a Cycling pattern from www.turnstep.com. (pattern 2995)

I use a combination of visualization and drills/intervals in my class. One standard that everyone seems to look forward to is our "2+ Minute Race".

The race typically starts somewhere in the middle of a visualization: top of a mountain, flat road, middle of a city amongst 1000 cyclists...

We cycle to the starting line and I prep them for the start of the race.

Prep: There will be 3 (or what ever you choose) markers for increased resistance during the race. The win depends on our combined times, so we all have to cycle as fast as we can. We are a team and we will all work together to WIN!.

Then "They're Off!" or "Bang!" the starting gun has fired.

They never know when the race will end, but it is usually between 2-3 minutes. I tell them we passed marker #1 and to increase resistance then #2, #3...

I will use visualization to keep them going, i.e. "The other team is on Jane's back wheel, hurry up or they will pass us," or: "A dog is chasing us and is nipping at Fred's back wheel."

Typically the last 15 seconds I will motivate them to cycle as fast as they can, i.e. "We are neck and neck with the team that has never lost. Let's GO!!!"

Then at the end I tell them the amount of time and we all cheer that the pain (or race) is over!!!

The patterns I have seen are really great and very creative...Keep those ideas flowing!!!
