Kickbox Terminology Only
This is a
BoxAerobics pattern from
www.turnstep.com.
(pattern 3030)
I. Terminology
- Basic Stance - On the balls of the feet, knees soft.
One foot placed in front of the other (front heel
aligned with the back toe.) The feet always remain in
wide stance.
- Guard Up - Otherwise known as "reset", it is the starting
and ending position for all boxing moves. Fists are in
front, close together protecting the chin (not too high)
and elbows protect ribs.
- Slip or Duck - Bending the knees to avoid the punch while
moving side to side. (bob and weave)
- Basic Punches:
- Jab - Front arm punches forward, rotating so the fist
faces directly front. The elbow remains soft, and the
arm pulls back quickly. The #1 punch, the front hand
is always the jab hand.
- Hook - Front arm lifts from the elbow and punches from
the side. The elbow is up, and the fist faces the side wall.
- Upper Cut - The fist faces from low to high with the
fist facing the ceiling. The punch is tight to the
body, and the elbows do not drop behind the body.
- Power Punch - Thrown from the rear hand. As the punch is
thrown forward with the fist facing forward, the hips
rotate forward and flex. The back shoulder presses forward
to allow an extra three inches extension on the punching arm.
- Cross Punch - A variation of the power punch, the arm
crosses the chest.
- Basic Kicks:
- Front Kick - Lift the knee, extend lower leg, foot
pointed, forward facing.
- Side Kick - Leading with the heel, the kick is toward
the side walls.
- Rear Kick - Again leading with the heel, kick toward
the back wall with torso remaining in a semi-upright position.
- Roundhouse - Internal rotation of the hip, can be cued
to "slap" with shoelaces.
- Crescent - Lift leg, externally rotate hip, lower leg.
- Stance Variations:
- Hops - Bounce on both feet at the same time in the
basic stance position.
- Glide - Shuffle forward four steps, then back.
- Switch Stance - Switching the lead foot.
- Boxer's Dance - Shift body weight to alternate feet
staying on the balls of the feet.
- Twist - Basic stance position, performed in a controlled
fashion with movement limited to the waist up.
II. Teaching Tips
- Music should be +/- 135 BPMs.
- Stress proper form, control of movement, and precision
throughout class.
- Keep joints soft and body weight light on balls of feet
(while performing boxer's dance).
- Complete punches quickly and return each time to
"guard up" (reset).
- Inform participants that kick boxing classes are a
"hybrid" combining martial arts, boxing, and traditional
aerobics-type classes, therefore, marked variety will
exist in instructor's classes.
I have found frustration in the fact that markedly different
terminology is used in the kick boxing genre of aerobics. This
breakdown of terminology is not intended to serve as the
standardized interpretation of these terms, but to invite
discussion as to whether they are correct or not. Thank
you for your input.
