Beginner Stuff
This is a
Step pattern from
www.turnstep.com.
(pattern 1811)
I have taken it upon myself to teach an intro to step class at the gym I belong to. I
found that we really needed this. I have outlined a class that seems to be working really
well. Below is a simple combination that I use to teach the basic steps. First, I have to
remind myself that everyone in class has never heard of a grapevine or step touch or even
a turnstep. So we have to do everything by description first then I teach the name and
ask several times throughout the class what the step we are doing is called.
- Basic right 2x (8 counts)
- Turnstep 2X (8)
- Over the top 2X (8)
- Single knees, side to side (once each side) (8)
- Single hamstring curls side to side (8 counts)
- Repeater knee side to side (16)
- Repeater hamstring curl 1X (8)
Total 64 counts
Repeat all on the left lead.
I have found that the students really like this class and most plan on returning on a
weekly basis regardless of the fact that it is an intro class and will be the same week
after week. It was fun but different teaching this class as compared to teaching the
more advanced choreography that I am used to. We run this class for 45 minutes and it takes
all of it to explain and breakdown the warmup and the above combination. If anyone else
teaches an intro or true beginners class, I would love your ideas and input. Happy to share
my own as well. ;-)
