Hot Pants Hi/Low

This is a Hi/Lo pattern from www.turnstep.com. (pattern 8306)

This routine borrows heavily from an episode of ESPN2's Crunch which featured Sue Hitzmann. She called it "Hot Pants Hi/Low," so I have done the same.

Anything appearing with 2 stars (**) has an explanation following.

Warmup:

Combos:

Explanations (all start on right foot for argument's sake, and all are from participant's point of view. That is, the right hand side is the right for the CLASS, not the instructor. ):

Grapevine with karate side kick: the side kick comes on the 4th count.

Step touch (right arm up, left arm up): (Count 1) right foot steps to right side, right arm lifts straight overhead (2) left foot steps right (right arm remains overhead) (3) left foot steps left, left arm lifts overhead (right arm is still up) (4) right foot steps left (both arms remain overhead). Then, both arms cross in front during the following grapevine.

Box step: is 4 ham curls turning in a circle with arms alternately punching front. (Count 1) right foot steps to right side (2) left ham curl while turning, left arm punches (each ham curl makes a quarter turn, so this punch is actually to the right side wall) (3) left foot steps on floor (4) right ham curl, right arm punches (facing the back) (5) right foot steps on floor (6) left ham curl, left arm punches (facing left wall) (7) left foot steps on floor (8) right ham curl, right arm punches (facing front).

Tai Chi squat: is 2 slow squats to the back with "Tai Chi" arms. Feet start together (Counts 1-2) Right foot turns outward and squats to the back. Left arm extends straight forward with palm facing forward, right elbow pulls back with palm facing forward. (3-4) Right foot comes together with left, 2 claps. (Counts 5-6) Left foot turns outward and squats to the back. Right arm extends straight forward with palm facing forward, left elbow pulls back with palm facing forward. (3-4) Left foot comes together with right, 2 claps.

Karate knees forward: 4 step knees moving forward, but bent arms pull diagonally, **sharply** across the body as you yell "Hah!" on each knee.

Out out, in in: Has a rhythm change you pause between the "out out" and the "in in." (Count 1) quickly jump right foot out, left foot out (2) hold feet out (3) Quickly jump right foot in, left foot in (4) Hold feet in.

3 little jumps, turning in circle: To break this down, I first show: out out, in in, then jump, jump, jump in place. Once the class has that, I change it to: out out, in in, then jump, jump, jump while turning.

Whew, explaining hi/low moves takes a lot more work than explaining step moves!

Please feel free to email with questions of comments. As always, thanks to Greg and everyone who shares their wonderful ideas!
