Buckets For Strength

This is a Cycling pattern from www.turnstep.com. (pattern 7503)

In trying to find a safe and effective means of cycling with only one leg without the potential for injury on the stationary bike I decided to utilize plastic buckets (ones commonly used to store cucumbers, or spatching material). I place one on each side just in front of the pedals so as not to interfere with pedaling. Then I have the clients put one foot on one of the buckets and only pedal with the opposite leg. I utilize different pedaling strokes ie. speed, higher intensity, fast and slow techniques etc. in order to vary the workout. This allows great workouts for individual legs and improves the equalization of leg strength since most of us tend to be one sided (just as we are left or right handed). It is much more effective than trying to imagine using just one leg for pedalling. The technique was derived from one we use for training on the road.
