Intermediate Step with Meg
This is a
Step pattern from
www.turnstep.com.
(pattern 9532)
I just did this last night with my Step 2 and it went well.
It's not super-tricky, but a tough workout. All combos reverse
in 32 except Combo B, which is 64-count. Step is horizontal
and I do have *some* taps, but not many.
Combo A:
- Basic 2x with "swoosh arms" (both hands up right, up left,
down right, down left) (8 counts)
- V-step 2x (I did right hand up, left hand up in a
V-shape, clap on counts 3,4) (8 counts)
- Abduct alternate 2X (8 counts)
- 2 Repeater knee with a lay-up over (2 knees, then the 3rd
knee becomes a hop over- step left foot down on other
side)
You are now facing SOUTH to repeat on the left lead
Combo B:
- Egyptian 1X (from the awesome Kathy Z! See below) (8
counts)
- Turnstep 2X (the classic version - clap on count 4)
Make them big! (8 counts)
- Chasse on the floor facing SOUTH 2X (it may sound strange,
but if the turnsteps are big, it flows nicely) - look out
for your step since it's behind you (8 counts) (** See
pattern #8611 if you don't know the Chasse) I was cuing, "
Southbound"
- Diagonal over the top (Reebok terminology = 'corner to
corner') (4 counts)
- March, jog, step-touch, or shuffle around the end on the
floor (I leave it up to them) (4 counts)
- Left foot up, right foot up, and lunge astride
left,right, (exit astride) (8 counts)
- Kick, straddle, kick 2X (exit astride again) (8 counts)
- "Walk the step" (some say "peg leg") 1X (8 counts)**
- Glutes alternate 2X (8 counts) (one clap on 4, 2 quick
claps on 8)
Combo C
- Curb walk 1X (8 counts) (option for those who crave
super-hi intensity - DOUBLE TIME! 2 curb walks in 8
counts, so it's basically a running tap up, tap
astride)
- Mambo right cha cha, mambo left (8 counts) option - mambo
right on the step, cha cha and turn over the right
shoulder to mambo left on the floor facing south
- 3 Hams on top (step right, ham curl left, left foot on the
step, ham right, right foot on step, left ham then step
down left, down right -- reverses lead) (8 counts)
- Jack on the floor 2X (4 counts)
- One slow jack (clap on 3,4) Pulling in with the abs (4
counts) --- so it's "jack quick quick slow"
Combo D
- "Rock and Pop" - 2/3 of a rocking horse (one curl, one
knee on top), into a hop turn- end astride facing EAST)
(8 counts)
- Basic left astride 2X (arms sort of punch side to side at
shoulder height) (option on the second one to hop up, step
down) (8 counts)
- "Broadway Knee"***- I cue it "knee walk" so my members
don't have to remember fancy names. (arms make one big,
dramatic circle clockwise, then counter clockwise as you
come back) (8 counts)
- Charleston kick 2X (8 counts)
Explanations (on right lead):
Walk the step
Basically a traveling bench march, - facing west, on the
home side, next to the step,
- 1. Right foot on top
- 3. Travel forward, right foot in front of the step on
the West side
- 5. Travel backwards, right foot back on top of the
step) (careful here since it's a "BLIND" move, you're
moving backwards onto the step when you can't see it - I
tell people who are new not to come too far forward till
they are comfortable knowing where the step is.
- 7. Right foot down behind the step
Left foot just chugs along on the floor on the upbeat
(even counts).
Arms- up, out to the side, up, out again.
Broadway Knee
The exact same counts as alternating knees, except the
second one is on the floor and you keep facing North (or
Northwest) and walk backwards
- 1. Right foot on step
- 2. Left knee
- 3. Left foot down
- 4. Right foot down & back
- 5. Left foot step backwards
- 6. Lift right knee
- 7. Right foot steps back up towards step (still on floor)
- 8. Left foot steps back up towards step (still on floor)
This works well with kicks too. I emphasize "2" and "6" so
they feel the flow, since it's just like regular alternating
knees in another direction - and don't end up lifting the left
knee on count 5.
Egyptian (as explained by Kathy Z):
- (1) Right foot to west corner
- (2) Left foot stomps the floor on west END of step
- (3) Left foot comes back to home
- (4) Right foot steps down wide
- (5) Left foot to east corner
- (6) Right foot stomps floor on east END of step
- (7) Right foot comes back to home
- (8) Left foot steps back down
Arms are as follows:
- (1) Both arms straight out in front of you
- (2) One arm out to each side, elbows slightly bent,
palms up like an Egyptian
- (3) Both arms straight on in front of you
- (4) Both arms down
Questions or comments, please email. Many thanks to Kathy
Z.
