Awesome ideas everyone!
As well as the 'perceived exertion chart' I use old fashioned military cadence to regulate cardio portions of our workouts. It's sort of a trademark of mine but members love it so much I thought I'd share the fun...

I teach in the water, however you could yell from the deck just as well :-) If they can't yell back, I explain, then they're working too hard and need to take it down a notch. Once everyone's at a comfortable pace I begin and they repeat it back to me.

As you can imagine this can go on quite a while...Some of my members have Granny living well beyond 100.
