Crossphrasing 101

This is a Step pattern from (pattern 14737)

I use these combos to introduce crossphrasing in my basic step class. (Crossphrasing contains elements not strictly based on 4, 8, 16, or 32 counts.) This pattern is very user-friendly; notice that all three combos face the front. You can always gussy some of the moves up for your more advanced members.

Right lead, horizontal step:

Five count L-step: (1) step up right, (2) step left foot on floor left of step, (3) step right foot back up on bench, (4,5) step to floor behind bench left and right

Left knee pump repeater: (1) step up right, (2) left knee lift (3,4,5) left toes bounce on floor three times (6) left knee lift (7,8) exit to floor left and right (lead changer)

Single side squat left: (1) step up right, (2) left leg taps wide to the floor while right leg squats on the step, (3,4) march left, right on the floor

Double side squat left: (1) step up right, (2,3,4) left leg taps wide, taps behind right leg, and taps wide again, (5,6) march left, right on the floor
