Goin' On a Bear Hunt
This is an
Aquatic pattern from

(pattern 14378)
I teach an Arthritis Foundation Water class and my seniors loved this idea. It comes from the children's story of Going on a Bear hunt. I was Patty the Park Ranger leading them on the bear hunt. (I used the full length of the pool and traveled)
- We started our walk by stretching.
- Then we took of walking down the trail. (Walking the length of the pool)
- First we come to fallen trees in the trail. Can't go under them, Can't go around, We gotta go over them. (High knee march and lift up the trail leg like you are going over hurdles. I also had them face me and climb over the trees sideways, still lifting that trail leg)
- Back on the trail again walking. (Walking/marching in place)
- Come to a tall grass prairie (We are in Oklahoma!) Can't go under it, Can't go around it, Gotta go through it! (Toy soldier march with breast stroke arms to move the grass out of your way)
- Back on the trail walking again.
- Come to a river and the bridge it out! Can't go under it, Can't go around it, Gotta swim it! (March with front crawl arms, added also back stroke arms)
- Back to walking the trail.
- Come to a huge tree! Can't go around it, Can't go under it, Gotta go over it! (High knee march with reaching arms over head. Climb up one side and down the other!)
- Back to walking the trail.
- We come to a field of wild flowers. We squat to pick up flowers to take home!
- Back on the trail again, we come to the cave and find a bear. He starts to chase us so we have to go back to through the woods in double time.
- First squats, then run to the tree, quickly climb the tree and run to the river. Swim the river as fast a we can and run to the field. Run through the field because the bear is gaining on us! Out of the field and run to the fallen trees. Climb over the fallen trees with hurdle motion as quickly as possible. Run then to Patty the Park Ranger's house. Open the door and we are safe.
I then used noodles as a cool down and we discussed how National Geographic will be coming and getting our story! Hope your class enjoys this as much as mine! Please feel free to contact me with questions or comments!
