Survivor Poolau
This is an
Aquatic pattern from

(pattern 15381)
This was a special themed class that I gave using inflatable boats (used at the Y for boat safety). The class was divided in two teams, using red and blue bandannas. Envelopes with instructions at the deep end for the tasks were prepared ahead. A trip or two to the Dollar Store augmented the props. Each group was given their own supplies and instructions, exactly the same. NO ONE GETS VOTED OFF THE ISLAND. TEAM EFFORT COUNTS. This was roughly (very roughly patterned after the t.v. program)
Tasks included:
- 1. ROWING TO THE ISLAND (using the boats, paddle/push up and down the pool changing passengers)
- 2. BUILDING A SHELTER--setting up the boat as a shelter on deck (one person allowed out, the rest in the water)
- 3. BUILDING FIRE--matches and tealights at the shallow end--three candles must be lit and in order to do that you must keep the matches and candles dry as you proceed to the deep end "camp"
- 4. BRINGING WATER--to the shallow end for a bucket and foam cups, and to the deep end to "camp". Fill the buckets with water (but water was only to be taken from the midline of the pool)
- 5. PUZZLE CHALLENGE-- see-through plastic frogs with parts (another dollar store type purchase) disassembled at the shallow end reassembled at the deep end as each person assigned to take a part or parts to the deep end
- 6. FOOD CHALLENGE--eat gummi frogs suspended in premade jello (I used blue and green jellos and mixed them together after they hardened). The gummi frogs, of course, get cold and slimy in the jello--perfect challenge...fish them out with a spoon.
- 7. CLOTHING CHALLENGE--old 4x tee shirt had to be put on and taken off by each team member (do it in the deep end or take the time to travel to the shallow end to make the task easier, but take longer)
- 8. ALLIGATOR WRESTLING--each person had to get on or make it over the top of the inflated 5' alligator pool toy in some way (usually getting dunked in the process)
- 9. Alligator/octopus gummi food challenge--each person to eat one...
- 10. ROPES CHALLENGE--one team member ties a rope to the deep end lane line loop, and adds a hula hoop to the line (loose, not tied), and the rope is tied tightly to the shallow end wall. Each team member had to go hand over hand from the deep end to shallow end and back without totally letting go of the line, and without touching bottom in the shallow end. Here each person allowed about a ten foot lead, and part of the challenge was passing those who were returning. Someone unties the deep end knots after a teammate is stationed at the shallow end to wind up the rope after untying.
- 11. FOOD CHALLENGE--eat gummi worms and centipedes fished out of "dirt"--pie pans with graham cracker crumbs and oreo crumbs in it..eat a spoonful of "dirt".
- 12. Any bandannas used to identify the team on equipment (boat, alligator, lane line loops) are collected. Teams celebrate with a victory dance using their own bandannas in one hand and one hand on the team flag bandannas. Teams congratulated each other for just finishing.
First place team--funny money (big bucks), second place team--"greenbacks"--frog pictures with a swatch of green.
