Nate's Step Stuff #1--Combo 2
This is a
Step pattern from
www.turnstep.com.
(pattern 14807)
Hi, gang! Looks like the other combo went through ok, so here's Combo 2! Enjoy! As always, email me with any questions/concerns.
Combo 2
FINISHED PRODUCT
- [Right lead] 1/2 L-step turning into the step (1-4)
- [Left lead] Across the top turning into the step (5-8)
- [Left lead] Finish the L-step turning out from the step (9-10)
- [Right lead] Walk back or 3 point turn moving diagonally toward SW (11-13)
- [Left lead] Karate kick (14)
- [Left lead] Walk toward step (15-16)
- [Left lead] "Ricochet" (17-26)
- [Right lead] Repeater 2 abduction & pop turn (27-32)
BREAKDOWN
- Set up base block as follows: Repeater 3 knee (8, self-reversing), 2 alternating knee lifts (8) = 16, self-reversing.
- While class is repeating base block of 16, demo layer as follows (assume right lead): right lead 1/2 L-step *with temporary tap down* (4), right lead across the top *with temporary tap down* (4), left lead "finish the L-step" (4), right lead step knee (4) = 16, self-reversing. As class shows competence in this layer, demo taking out the taps on the first two moves, so the combo now looks like: right lead 1/2 L-step turning into the step (4), left lead across the top turning into the step (4), left lead "finish the L-step" (4), right lead step knee (4) = 16, self-reversing.
- A couple of comments--You are now facing the back when going across the top. In order for this turning sequence to be done safely, participants must fully unload the heel on the first L-step--if they are not able or choose not to jump, they should be encouraged to stay with the first non-turning version (which is why I teach it--I normally avoid taps but in this sequence, it does provide an additional level for those who are not keen on turning and/or jumping).
- Now we can layer in the travel on the last 8 counts. While your participants are cycling through the 16 counts above, preview the travel on the knee lifts. The footwork is as follows (assume left lead):
- Beats 9-10--left lead step knee as if finishing an L-step
- Beats 11-13--right lead walk back on diagonal moving towards SW
- Beat 14--Lift left knee
- Beats 15-16--left lead walk toward bench
- Eventually, the knee lift on Beat 14 can be changed to a karate kick. If you've got advanced participants who are willing to unload the heel, you can add an outside turn on beats 9-10. This will then require that you continue turning on beats 11-13 as you move backwards (sort of like a 3-point turn in a hi/low class).
- At this point, counts 1-16 are completely built and layered. Remind your participants on the non-turning, non-jumping options so that no one feels left out.
- To build the second half, create a base block of 16 as follows: 2 single stomps right and left (6), step ham curl (4), repeater 2 abduction (6) = 16, NOT self-reversing. So, you can either introduce this as the second set of 16 counts (that is, go "from the top" of Combo 2, and introduce this block at beat 17), or work with this block separately and add a self-reversing "brain break" filler of 16 counts (e.g., 3 alternating kicks and a basic).
- Change the order of this block to be (assume left lead): left lead single stomp (3), right lead step ham curl (4), left lead single stomp (3), right lead repeater 2 abduction (6) = 16. The first 10 counts of this block form the base pattern of the "Ricochet"--don't ask me where I got the name, it just came to me as I was playing with this pattern.
- The "Ricochet" is done by taking the single stomps OUTSIDE of the area directly behind the step. In addition, the step ham curl becomes a "switch curl", or a ham curl with propulsion that takes you over the top. The best way I can describe this is to imagine the foot placement on beat 2 when you perform a mambo off of the side of the step--the single stomps in the "Ricochet" are done similarly. The "switch curl" therefore helps you not only move from the back side of the step to the front side, it also moves you from the west side of the step to the east side.
In more explicit terms, the "Ricochet" is as follows:- Beat 1--Right foot stomps the SW corner of the bench
- Beat 2--Left foot steps on floor to the W of the SW corner of the bench
- Beat 3--Right foot steps on floor behind the SW corner of the bench
- Beat 4-7--Left leading propulsive "switch curl" moves you from SW corner of step to NE corner
- Beat 8--Right foot stomps the NE corner of the bench (you are now facing the back of the room)
- Beat 9--Left foot steps on floor to the E of the NE corner of the bench
- Beat 10--Right foot steps on floor behind the NE corner of the bench
- The issue that arises now is that you are on the front side of the step and you need to be on the back side, so while you are demoing the "Ricochet" layer, you will also need to point out that you're using a repeater 2 abduction STRADDLE to get you back home. This shouldn't create too much confusion since, hopefully, you've got your participants facing forward doing the base version (single stomp, step ham curl, single stomp, repeater 2 abduction) while you're demoing the "Ricochet" layer.
- An optional additional layer would be to substitute a forward-turning pop turn in place of the second abduction on beats 29-30. This would remove the need to straddle on beats 31-32 because the pop turn would bring you back home, ready to begin at the top with the L-step.
