Single-to-Double Convertible Vertical
This is a
Step pattern from
www.turnstep.com.
(pattern 15732)
My intermediate step class at a new gym had not done vertical in about 2 years, and no one had done double step before, so I created a set of single vertical combos that I transitioned to double vertical after a couple weeks. Lots of smiles and compliments received!
Note: combos 1 & 2 start on the small end of the step, 3 & 4 start on the left side - if you like to go back to the top to review combos between breakdowns (like me), I used a knee back to the short end/alternating knees for a 32-count to bring them back. All combos are self-reversing.
Combos 1-4, Single Vertical
Combo 1 (32 counts) - start facing the short end
- L-step (8)
- Knees alternating x2 (8) - short end facing front
- V-step x2 (8) - on the floor; I did the "bowtie" (one front, one back)
- T-step** (8)
* My T-step is a step up right/left (1/2), straddle down (3/4), step up right/left (5/6), exit rear (7/8); option to hop/knee back up on top on counts 5-6 for intensity
Combo 2 (32 counts) - start facing the short end
- 1/2 L-step (4)
- Rocking horse (4) - I cue this as a "knee off the side and rock"
- Diagonal over (4)
- 2 Jumping jacks back (4)
- Shuffle turn (4) - now on the right side of the step, left lead
- Basic step x2 (8) - facing the bench horizontally, move it down towards the back of the room
- Knee hop turn (4) - back to the short end, facing front
Combo 3 (32 counts) - really starts on the long side of the bench, but works from the short end also
- Double knee repeater, straddle down x2 (12)
- Single knee straddle x2 (8)
- Glute switch/helicopter over (4)
- Shuffle turn x2 (8)
Combo 4 (32 counts) - same start as #3
- Indecision lunges to the side, straddle down (8)
- Side leg/abductors x2, straddle down (8)
- Kick/straddle x2 (8)
- 4 Hops back (straddling the bench), 2 jacks (8)
Combos 1-4, morphed for Double Vertical
I call the left step home, right step away
Combo 1 (32 counts) - starts on home (left) step, facing short end
- L-step (8) (home)
- Double knee repeater x2 (12) ("ping pong" away/home)
- V-step (4) (in the center/alley, stepping on both benches)
- Single knees alternating x2 (8) ("ping pong" away/home)
Combo 2 (32 counts) - starts on home step, facing short end
- 1/2 L-step off the side (4) (home)
- Rocking horse (4) (home)
- Diagonal over (4) (home, ends up in the center)
- Walk or step tap around the other step (4) (move to away step, no taps after the diagonal over)
- Basic step x3 (12) (away, moving down towards back of the room)
- Knee hop turn (4) (away, turning to face the short end to the front again)
Combo 3 (32 counts) - starts on home step, facing front along the long side of the step, but can work facing the short end
- Double knee repeater, straddle down x2 (12) (home)
- Single knee straddle, single knee exit (8) (exits to the center)
- Glute switch/helicopter over the other step (4) (away)
- Shuffle turn x2 (8) (away)
Combo 4 (32 counts) - same as #3
- Indecision lunges to the side, straddle down (8) (home)
- Over the top (4) (home - really an up-up, exit to the center)
- Kicks alternating x2 (8) ("ping pong" between away/home in the center between the benches)
- Over the top (4) (away)
- Power squats/jacks x2 (8) (facing front along long side of step, ready to start combo on opposite lead)
I hope you enjoy these! Especially if your class is "double-shy", it's a good way to transition them, building from combos that they have practiced before. Any questions, please email!
