"Slice the Corner" from Jacque
This is a
Step pattern from
www.turnstep.com.
(pattern 16070)
This combo taught very well the first time this morning. It took up 20+ minutes of class time! Horizontal board. Tapfree, reversing, 32 counts. Breakdown follows the description of moves.
- Right lead: Slice the corner (5) *
- Right lead: 6 count mambo OR pivot on floor on second stomp (6)
- Right lead: Flick-kick (5) **
- Left lead: Basic straddle (4)
- Left lead: Jazz square walks home (4) ***
- Left lead: Stomp & tango (8) ****
Description of Moves:
Slice the corner: step right on SW corner, lift left leg to side while simultaneously going over the top to exit on the N side for 3 marches on the floor. You turn in toward the corner (also toward the lifted leg. On a right lead you would turn counter-clockwise) and end up facing the back wall. You are ready to stomp the NE corner.
Flick-kick: step up right on count 1; do 2 quick kicks counts 2,3; exit counts 4,5.
Jazz square: from a straddle position - step forward on count 1; cross the other leg over on count 2; step wide on count 3; face the front on count 4.
Stomp & tango: the base for this is 2 mambos. I cue it "stomp 123, stomp 123". Stomp the corner on count 1; turn in toward your step and reverse to face back on counts 2,3,4; step behind on count 5; reverse your spin to come back to where you started on counts 6,7,8.
Breakdown:
Base for first 16 counts: Side leg + 3 basics.
- Layer 1: Side leg + back mambo, stomp + 2 basics. (1,2 = step right, side leg left) + (3,4,5 = exit left, back mambo right/left) + (6,7,8 = stomp right on SW corner, march left/right) + 2 basics left lead.
- Layer 2: Side leg + back mambo, stomp + stomp the other corner + double stomp the corner where you started.
- Layer 3: Optional pivot on the floor for the second single stomp.
- Layer 4: Flick-kick replaces the double stomp.
- Layer 5: Add 4 basics. This is filler for processing the directional change coming next & is the base for the second 16 counts.
- Layer 6: Demo the directional change while they stay with the front-facing version. Come back to them while they do 4 basics: you do a basic straddle + walk over & exit + 2 more basics with them.
- Layer 7: Block and teach the next 16 counts. Base = 4 basics.
- Layer 8: Basic straddle, walk over to the N side; basic straddle, walk over to home. Repeat if needed.
- Layer 9: Change the "walk over" part to a jazz square on the floor - basic straddle, jazz square to the N side: basic straddle, jazz square home.
- Layer 10: Insert this into the combo:
right lead: slice the corner (5)
right lead: 6 count mambo OR pivot on floor on second stomp (6)
right lead: flick-kick (5)
+
left lead: basic straddle (4)
left lead: jazz square walks home (4)
left lead: 2 basics (8)
- Layer 11: Block and teach "stomp & tango" base = 2 mambos.
- Layer 12: Insert this into the combo for the final.
