Shallow Moves Can Be Fun
This is an
Aquatic pattern from
www.turnstep.com.
(pattern 16439)
(This pattern is my old reliable when I get asked to sub at the last minute. I count by time instead of beats per minute.)
Warm-up. I generally do the moves at a slower pace and cue proper body position and breathing. It also gives me the opportunity to explain how to do each move from the side of the pool. (Our instructors teach in the pool.)
Each move is done for 30 seconds the first time. I then do each move for 1 minute at a quicker pace, adding weights. Moves are done a third time, if time permits.
- Jog forward, pushing arms with flat palms by your side. I let them know to reverse this if they reach the pool's wall)
- Wide knee-jog. Push arms out to the side.
- Straddle jog. (We call this a tire run. The move is narrow narrow jog, wide wide jog)
- Heel touches in front. Opposite hand touches oppostie heel or ankle in front.
- Opposite elbow to opposite knee.
- Place hands on shoulders. Opposite elbow to opposite knee.
- Straight leg forward. Cue point your toe and reach opposite hand to opposite foot.
- Hamstring jog. One foot at a time kicks your butt. Arms are a bicep curl.
- Both feet kick up at the same time. Palms facing down, working together, lean forward slightly.
- Knees to the side and jump up to touch your elbows to knees. (This is a challenge move. Students may choose one of the 2 prior moves if this is too difficult.)
- Bunny hop. Knees together.
- Frog jump. Knees go out to the side. Hands between knees.
- Jump shots. Land on toes, roll back to your heels.
- Run to wall. Alternate straight leg kick backs.
- Flutter kick on the wall.
- Push off and repeat at a faster pace.
I then add abs. One of our favorites is add-on. Each student names a favorite ab move and then the second person adds a favorite move and does the first move and so on...
Stretch out and cool down. Have fun!!! Let me know if you have any questions.
