Disco Cardio

This routine comes from Misty Tripoli's Studio 54. Check out her web-site; she has awesome tutorials! I've adapted the disco moves to meet the skill/fitness levels of my class of 18-24 participants who are 35-85 years old. All combos are self-reversing. I start with the basic moves, give them the add-on and repeat both right and left a couple times. Then I add in the next combo until they do all six combos together. The class enjoys doing the whole routine to "You should be Dancing" by the Bee Gees as their finale! I use music that's about 130-135bpm. All combos start on right lead and are 32-count.
Combo I
- Hustle up and back with a clap (8 count)
- Add on: 2-John T's (8 count)-stand with feet hip-width apart, take your right pointy finger up to the sky on right side and down to left foot (this is from a disco routine found here-thanks!)
Combo II
- Grapevine "L" (8 count)
- Add on at end of each "L": Wax on, Wax off (8 count)-stand with feet hip-width apart, roll arms over head, then "polish" the booty (shake it!). Imagine you are using a towel to dry off the behind back and forth (like you do to dry your back).
Combo III
- Step-touch forward and back with "deal-it" hands going up and clapping going back (16 count). "Deal-it hands": flick hands out to sides, palms up as if you are throwing playing cards out as you go.
- Add on at each end: Party high, Party low (8 count)-stand with feet hip-width apart, roll arms over head, then bend from waist and roll arms low in front of knees or lower
Combo IV
- Hitchhiker right 4X, return left (16 count)-take 4 steps to the right (step-together, step-together, etc), leading with your right thumb; return left leading with your left thumb. Use some hip-action here to travel.
- Add on at each end: Pose & Point (8 count)--stand with feet hip-width apart, take the hitchhike hand and point your finger with a straight arm while shaking your hips to the music. Get creative with this. Swing your arm over you head, behind you, up high, or down low. Repeat with the left arm, then thumb your way back.
Combo V
- V-step right 2x with a turn to the right, V-step left 2x with a turn back to front (16 count)
- Add on between 2 v-steps: Solid Gold (8 count)-stand with feet hip-width apart, bend from waist, take hands behind back at booty level palms facing away and while shaking hips side to side wave hands back and forth (as if you let go of a "stinky" and are trying to fan it away!).
Combo VI
- Double step-touch right and left 2x (16 count). Arms are as Misty Tripoli's title called "boobs". As you go right, slide your right hand across your chest left to right, palm in-2x, with left arm out at shoulder level. Again use some hip action here as you go.
- Add on after each right & left:: Jump & Bump (8 count)-stand with feet hip-width apart, hands clasped over head; do a small jump, then use the hips to bump out to right, jump and bump left. Get creative with this-jump-turn, bump low, etc. At the end of this I get the participants to partner up so they can bump each other. Gets their heart-rate up and lots of laughs!
The fillers (hustle, grapevine, etc) can be modified to have higher impact moves-so you can adapt them as I'm sure you all know!
