I like to ride with timed anaerobic intervals. Music is important but I don't try to ride to each songs' beat. Just play energetic/upbeat/whatever you like!
This is for a 45 minute class but can be modified for a full hour. Just add an extra set, or, stretch out the times a little longer. I have three sets of nine minutes each with one minute recovery after each set. Toward the end of each set you should be pushing very hard working in zone 4 (anaerobic). Make the "turns" more pronounced in set two, and even bigger yet in set 3.
Here goes...
Warm Up for ten minutes. Qualify AT (Anaerobic Threshold)
For the workout we're going to turn right (add load) 2 times. Then turn left (take a little off) 1 time. For every 2 turns to the right we will come back left one turn. Times will vary with each set increasing as you go. Please email if you have questions.
This should take you through a 9 minute set ending on a "right again" the highest resistance.
Recover for one minute and repeat.
Set 2 should be 45 second segments for each turn.
Recover for one minute and repeat.
Set 3 should be 60 second segments for each turn.
Recover/cool down and stretch for 5 minutes.
